Fallece Clem Renouf, el presidente de RI que inspiró la labor de Rotary para la erradicación de la polio

Clem Renouf, presidente de RI 1978-1979, recuerda conversaciones con líderes de Rotary
en el momento en que la organización dirigió su atención a la erradicación de la polio.

Sir Clem Renouf, el presidente de Rotary International 1978-1979 que contribuyó a impulsar a Rotary hacia su meta principal de erradicar la polio en to do el mundo, falleció a la edad de 99 años.

Renouf fue socio del Club Rotario de Nambour, Queensland (Australia) durante 70 años. Sirvió a la organización como director de RI, fiduciario de la Fundación, gobernador de distrito, integrante y presidente de comités de RI y líder de capacitación en la Asamblea Internacional.

A comienzos de 1979, en un vuelo de regreso a su hogar desde Filipinas, Renouf leyó un artículo sobre la erradicación de la viruela. Él se preguntó si las nuevas Subvenciones de Salud, Nutrición y Desarrollo Humano (3-H) de Rotary podrían destinarse a la erradicación de otra enfermedad. Estas subvenciones hicieron posible que, por primera vez, más de un club o distrito participaran en un proyecto de servicio.

Renouf consultó con su amigo John Sever, quién entonces era gobernador de distrito en Maryland (EE.UU.) y fungía como Jefe de Enfermedades Infecciosas en los Institutos Nacionales de Salud de Estados Unidos. Sever era amigo de Jonas Salk y Albert Sabin, quienes desarrollaron las vacunas contra la polio en los años 50 y 60. Tras realizar algunas investigaciones, Sever dijo que la mejor opción para Rotary sería trabajar en pos de la erradicación de la polio.

“Clem puso entonces sus miras en la erradicación de la polio como un proyecto mundial de Rotary”, comentó Ray Klinginsmith, presidente de Rotary International 2010-2011, en un homenaje a Renouf.

En noviembre de 1979, la Directiva de RI acordó establecer la erradicación de la polio como objetivo principal del programa 3-H.

Renouf desempeñó un papel decisivo en la captación de fondos en los primeros momentos de la iniciativa. “Con el fin de recaudar fondos, Clem pidió a todos los clubes que contribuyeran con algo de dinero en efectivo, unos 15 dólares por socio, para proyectos de servicio, y el llamamiento recaudó la sorprendente cantidad de 7 millones de dólares”, explicó Klinginsmith. “Parte de ese dinero se utilizó luego para financiar el primer proyecto de inmunización contra la polio en Filipinas … Fue un gran éxito”.

En 1985, Rotary lanzó el programa PolioPlus, y más tarde encabezó la Iniciativa Mundial para la Erradicación de la Polio (GPEI, por sus siglas en inglés) con sus aliados: gobiernos nacionales, la Organización Mundial de la Salud, los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades de Estados Unidos y el UNICEF. La GPEI continúa trabajando para lograr la erradicación de la polio en todo el mundo.

Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Renouf sirvió en la Real Fuerza Aérea Australiana y después de esta fue contador y socio en la firma Renouf y Clarke. Fue socio del Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators y miembro de la Sociedad Australiana de Contadores Públicos, más tarde denominada CPA Australia. También fue fundador del hogar de ancianos Sundale Garden Village.

Rotary otorgó a Renouf el Premio Pionero de PolioPlus por su extraordinario servicio a PolioPlus, así como el Premio Dar de Sí antes de Pensar en Sí, la Citación por Servicio Meritorio de La Fundación Rotaria y el Premio por Servicios Distinguidos de La Fundación Rotaria. Renouf era Benefactor y Donante Mayor, así como integrante del Círculo Paul Harris y del Círculo de Testadores.

Klinginsmith describió a Renouf como una persona tranquila, pero un líder natural.

“Clem siempre fue amable y se mostró dispuesto a ayudar a los jóvenes rotarios, y fue él quien me dio la oportunidad de recorrer el camino del Rotary”, escribió Klinginsmith. “Rotary no se en contraría en el lugar en que se encuentra hoy en día sin las mejoras realizadas por Clem y su equipo”.
